Eliminating SIDS

Someone posted today about a researcher in New Zealand who thinks he has solved the mystery of what causes SIDS. He says that it is the gases that are put on mattresses as a flame retardant. He notes that in places where babies are generally not put on mattresses or in places where there are no flame retardants on the mattresses that the SIDS rate is virtually none.

Here is the kicker: he has designed a polyethylene mattress cover that goes over the mattress. Not a single baby who has this particular mattress cover has died of SIDS. Not a single one. The only problem is that it is not commercially available in the U.S. or most other countries for that matter. However, it can be ordered for about $35. Isn’t that worth the price to pay for your baby’s life?

If only SIDS organizations could listen to the compelling evidence of this man. Not a single baby dying after using this cover that doesn’t allow these toxic gases to escape. Seems to me that he’s hit it right on the head and I’ll tell you something. I’m going to go order one of these mattress covers. Too bad it’s coming from the country most furthest away from me and will take about 10 days to get here. I recommend you get one too.

I think its fine if you want to add a mattress cover to the crib. Dr. Sprout (the New Zealand researcher) has a very compelling website making his product seem like the one true answer to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. However, there are questions about his research. Why hasn’t any other researcher been able to replicate his data? That’s one of the keystones to good research is that it can be replicated by others.
Further, how does that explain babies that die in the adult bed, on couches, car seats etc.?
Have you checked to see if this product will reduce the fire retardant nature of the crib mattress?

Lots to consider. As the Executive Director for SIDS of Illinois, my largest concern is that I can’t figure out how he can make the claim that no babies have died using his bed covers. I have purchased one to have for my trainings. He has never contacted me to find out if my baby died or lived.

Order a mattress cover if it makes you feel comfortable and you can afford it. But, make sure you are also following all the proven research that has been so successful in reducing the number of infants dying suddenly and unexpectedly. Always sleep baby on his or her back for every sleep time. No soft bedding in the crib like bumpers, quilts, pillows, stuffed animals etc. Don’t ever allow anyone to smoke around your baby. Don’t cover babies head indoors. Breastfeed if at all possible. And use a pacifier if baby is willing.

Good Luck and Enjoy your baby!
